This is the Official Melee Pear Rankings for Utah! (Please read more)
Run by awesomepear, I'll try to keep it up as best as I can. If certain things are worrying you about how I'm doing the scaling, please contact me.
With that said, I'd love to present my evidence for why my PR should be used as the primary source for rankings. My summer ranking from just the algorithm would have been mostly accurate to the final summer rankings, the only changes needed were making tre #2 because of the regionals, easy 4th because of h2h's and lack of bad placements, switching kajo and bann (because I guess h2h's?? genuinely don't know of any other reason bann clearly had a stronger summer otherwise), and including AssortedGoods(another decision I don't quite get but yeah). I think this level of accuracy from purely algorithms is pretty crazy. Comparatively, the only other braacket ranking, Cruz/pech's year long ranking, currently has easy at 6th in spite of a 1st at a regional, brent over kajo, as well as tre not even being in the top 10. While we have no clue what will happen for the rest of the year, I can very confidently say that my ranking would be more accurate to a jan-oct ranking, even if mine is also not perfect(easy not in second and tre being low due to lack of attendance being the two big problems). If my ranking was more available and wide-used, I think the people would both be more informed on the attendance requirements as well as with who is performing well at what times.
Tournament Attendance
Tournament attendance is something I think is very important to promote. Having a lot of players come to your tournaments is really good, and having really good players come to your tournaments makes all of the players better at the game. It also makes the value of a tournament win far greater when it's over outstanding players, as well as giving other players more opportunities to win over them. I believe it is both good for the community, good for each individual player, and healthy for the Power Rankings(not pear rankings) to have everyone, including the elite level players, attend as many tournaments as possible.
For each quarter, 4 tournaments will be required. This is less than 2 per month which I don't think is very unfair or hard to reach. For the summer rankings(Jan-July), 8 tournaments are required. A 7 month period for 8 tournaments seems decently reasonable to me. For the annual ranking, 14 tournaments will be required. This means even if you miss out on a quarter, as long as you went to 2 tournaments during that quarter or many more during the other quarters, you should still be eligible.
Tournament weighting for Q4
Tournaments with 30+ players and 10+ PR players will automatically have 1000% weight
Tournaments with 10+ PR players will automatically have 500% weight
Tournaments with 7+ PR players and 15+ total players will automatically have 400% weight
Tournaments with 5+ PR players and 10+ total players will automatically have 200% weight
Tournaments with 3+ PR players and 10+ total players will automatically have 100% weight
Tournaments with 2 PR players and 10+ total players will automatically have 95% weight
Tournaments with 1 PR player and 10+ total players will automatically have 85% weight
Tournaments with less than 10 players of which less than half are PR will cap at 90%, and reach a minimum of 30% depending on player attendance
Tournaments with less than 10 players but more than half of which are PR will cap at 60%, and reach a minimum of 40% depending on total players
Tournaments with less than 7 players will cap at 50%

For the purposes of this ranking, PR player means that they either 1. Are currently PR in Utah, 2. Placed top 8 in the regionals from the year before, 3. Are the exception where they easily could place top 8 or be PR but are weird like Josh "dugslord88". Josh is the main exception for this. This is how you can have 10+ PR players, or have something like CHC4/5 count even though BillNyeTheSamusGuy wasn't at either of them.
The logic behind weighting tournaments:
I want to promote attendance, and I think weighting each tournament should help promote this from everyone. The bigger the tournament, the more value it should have. It, then, also means we don't have to manually decide as much on whether certain tournament results will matter more or less, such as regionals, which will be counted for as much as is possible, vs smaller locals, which could count for potentially less than half as much(and maybe even less in the future). With the added layer of control it gives, it makes the rankings hopefully show the accomplishments of each player better as they place higher in harder brackets, and means I can tune the rankings to be accurate to the eventual Power Rankings, or maybe have them be so accurate that it is used for the Power Ranking. Final note, Utah Ult has a minimum attendance requirement for a tournament to count towards PR, and while the attendance requirements are taken from their PR system, I decided that, since Utah Melee is so much smaller, it should not totally discredit smaller tournaments, and rather have them count significantly less than bigger ones.
