A double elimination tournament is a competition in which participants compete in two separate brackets: the winner's bracket and the loser's bracket. Here's a breakdown of the basic structure:
All participants start in the winner's bracket, with each match being one-on-one.
After the first round, half of the participants will have lost and will move to the loser's bracket, while the other half will remain in the winner's bracket.
In the winner's bracket, participants who win their match continue to compete in the winner's bracket, while those who lose move to the loser's bracket.
In the loser's bracket, participants who lose their match are eliminated from the tournament, while those who win continue to compete in the loser's bracket.
The winner of the winner's bracket and the winner of the loser's bracket will face each other in the championship round.
If the winner of the loser's bracket wins the championship round, a second championship round is played to determine the true champion.
If the winner of the winner's bracket wins the championship round, the tournament is over and they are declared the champion.
In summary, participants must lose two matches in order to be eliminated from the tournament, with the exception of the champion of the loser's bracket, who must win the championship round twice to be declared the true champion.
